Windows Server, Active Directory, and PowerShell
Run Windows Server the way an administrator does: install it, drive it with PowerShell, add roles and storage, build an isolated AD training domain, and manage users, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP.
About this course
This course takes a careful beginner to someone who can stand up and run a small Windows environment safely. You work with **Windows Server 2022** on two lab machines — a domain controller `dc01` and a member server `member01` — and you build a **dedicated, isolated training domain** (`ultilab.local`) that is never joined or trusted to any real corporate domain. You start with Windows Server editions, installation, and the two ways every task gets done — the graphical console and **PowerShell**, the language this course treats as the primary admin tool. You learn PowerShell properly: cmdlets, the object pipeline, help, scripting, and remoting. From there you add server roles and features, provision storage with NTFS and share permissions, and configure IP, a DNS server, and a DHCP scope. The heart of the course is Active Directory: what a domain, tree, and forest are; promoting `dc01`; organising users, groups, and OUs and delegating administration; Group Policy and how it is scoped and troubleshot; and how DNS and DHCP integrate with the directory. You finish with administration at scale in PowerShell and with the operational discipline of backup, recovery, and safe change. Every pure-PowerShell command in the course was executed on PowerShell 7 and its output is real. Windows-only steps (Server Manager, AD DS promotion, the ActiveDirectory module, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, storage, and backup) are written out precisely, syntax-verified, and documentation-checked against Microsoft Learn, with `[SCREENSHOT: ...]` placeholders where a real screen matters — so the text stands on its own before the hosted Windows lab is available. The course ends with a project: build and document the whole isolated training domain and hand over an operations runbook.

Outline
Lessons
Lesson 1: Windows Server editions, installation, the console, and PowerShellFree preview
Meet Windows Server 2022 — its editions, how it installs, the graphical console, and PowerShell as the admin language you will use throughout.
55 minLesson 2: PowerShell fundamentals — cmdlets, the pipeline, objects, help, and remoting
Learn the language you will use for the rest of the course — cmdlets, the object pipeline, discovery with help, small scripts, and running commands on a remote server.
1 h 20 minLesson 3: Server roles and features, storage, and NTFS and share permissions
Install roles and features, provision a data volume, share a folder, and set share and NTFS permissions to least privilege on member01.
1 h 15 minLesson 4: Networking on Windows — static IP, the DNS server, and DHCP
Give a server a fixed address, install and populate a DNS server, and hand out addresses with a DHCP scope on dc01.
1 h 20 minLesson 5: Active Directory Domain Services — domains, forests, and promoting dc01
Understand what a domain, tree, and forest are, then promote dc01 to the first domain controller of the isolated training forest ultilab.local.
1 h 25 minLesson 6: Users, groups, OUs, and delegation
Build an OU structure, create users and groups the AGDLP way, and delegate a helpdesk task with least privilege — in the GUI and with the ActiveDirectory module.
1 h 25 minLesson 7: Group Policy — GPOs, scope, common policies, and troubleshooting
Create and link a GPO, understand how policy is scoped and applied (LSDOU), filter it to a group, and troubleshoot it with gpupdate and gpresult.
1 h 20 minLesson 8: DNS and DHCP integration with Active Directory
See how AD-integrated DNS, secure dynamic updates, scavenging, and DHCP dynamic registration and authorisation keep the directory findable and its records clean.
1 h 10 minLesson 9: Administration at scale with PowerShell
Turn a CSV of new hires into accounts, generate logon names safely, build reports, and schedule a recurring report as a task.
1 h 25 minLesson 10: Troubleshooting, backup, and safe change
Back up a domain controller, understand DSRM and authoritative restore, recover a deleted object with the Recycle Bin, and read the event logs to diagnose problems.

Your lab
Real virtual machines on the Ultiblob cluster, reached from your browser. You administer them; we provision and destroy them.

Provisioned for you when you launch the lab from the course. The machines are yours for the access window; release them and launch again whenever you like.
