Azure Local: Hybrid Infrastructure and Hyperconverged Operations

Part 1 of the Azure Local program: reason about the platform, size it, secure it, prepare a deployment and deliver a defensible readiness package. Design-first; hosted labs in preparation.

About this course

Azure Local is Microsoft's hybrid, hyperconverged platform — the product formerly called Azure Stack HCI. It runs on customer-owned, **Microsoft-validated hardware**, it needs an **Azure subscription**, its control plane is **Azure Arc**, and it is **billed per physical core**. Those four facts shape every decision in this course and are stated plainly in Lesson 1. This is **Part 1 of a five-course program**, and it covers the work that happens before anyone racks a server. About **54 lessons** are arranged as an optional **prerequisite bridge** — Azure fundamentals, Microsoft Entra ID and Azure RBAC, Active Directory and DNS, PowerShell, Hyper-V, IP networking and VLANs, storage, failover clustering — followed by **nine modules**: foundations and use cases; architecture and deployment choices; readiness and sizing; identity and access; networking fundamentals; advanced networking; storage architecture; deployment preparation; and release evidence, operations preview and the readiness handoff. A motivated beginner can start at the bridge; an experienced administrator can test out of it with the diagnostic quiz and go straight to Module 1. **What the exercises are, honestly.** The course is paired with a **personal-sandbox lab pod of two Windows Server machines** — a management server running Active Directory and DNS for an isolated forest, and a host you prepare with the Hyper-V role. **Those hosted labs are in preparation and are not yet available**, so every exercise is written so that you can complete it as a documented design exercise in the meantime. Several exercises additionally need an **Azure training scope that this course does not yet provide** (resource-provider registration, role assignments, Arc onboarding); each one says so where it appears. Design exercises are submitted as **documents** and graded against the rubric. **There is no hosted Azure Local cluster in this course**, and none is provided: a real system needs validated hardware and a paid subscription. You will produce the artifacts a hybrid-infrastructure engineer actually writes — a decision canvas, a hardware-qualification record, a sizing worksheet, an IP and VLAN plan, a network-intent plan, a network-security rule set, a storage capacity plan and an applicability record — and finish with a go / go-with-conditions / no-go readiness handoff another engineer can challenge. The stated hours are a **planning estimate** built from lesson and lab minutes, not a measured figure.

Outline

Lessons

10 lessons · 13 h 10 min
  1. Lesson 1: What Azure Local is, and the planes it spansFree preview

Name the platform honestly, separate the control plane from the workload plane, place Azure Arc, and map five planes for a scenario.

    55 min
  2. Lesson 2: Architecture: nodes, cluster, storage, networking and the control plane

Walk the physical and logical building blocks of an Azure Local system and how the Azure control plane attaches to them.

    1 h 25 min
  3. Lesson 3: Choosing a qualified deployment model and validated hardware

Turn business constraints into a deployment-model decision record and a hardware-qualification record anchored to the Azure Local catalog.

    1 h 20 min
  4. Lesson 4: The supportability boundary and the lifecycle

Assign Microsoft, OEM, customer, integrator and workload responsibilities, and keep a system supported through its update lifecycle.

    1 h 15 min
  5. Lesson 5: Deploying Azure Local: a documented walkthrough

Walk the Azure-driven deployment — preflight, registration, cloud witness, verification — as a plan you write, not a cluster you run.

    1 h 25 min
  6. Lesson 6: Operating VMs and AKS on Azure Local

Provision and run Arc VMs and AKS clusters through the Azure control plane, and understand what stays a local responsibility.

    1 h 15 min
  7. Lesson 7: Storage and resilience

Choose Storage Spaces Direct resiliency for a stated availability objective and turn raw capacity into a defensible usable-capacity plan.

    1 h 30 min
  8. Lesson 8: Networking and security

Design SDN segmentation, network security groups, role-based access and secret custody for an Azure Local workload estate.

    1 h 25 min
  9. Lesson 9: Monitoring, updates and cost

Plan Azure Monitor monitoring and alerting, an update cadence that stays supported, and a per-core cost estimate with guest licensing.

    1 h 20 min
  10. Lesson 10: Reading release evidence and producing a readiness handoff

Turn release trains and builds into an exact applicability record, then assemble a go/no-go architecture-readiness handoff another engineer can reproduce.
