SQL Server Database Administration
Learn to run a Microsoft SQL Server 2022 instance the way a working DBA does: install and connect, secure logins, back up and restore, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, automate, and plan for failure.
About this course
This course turns a careful beginner into someone who can safely take responsibility for a small SQL Server instance. You work with **SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition**, connect with **SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)**, and practise on Microsoft's **AdventureWorks2022** sample database on a Windows Server 2022 lab machine called `win01`. You start with what a database administrator actually does and how the engine is put together — editions, the instance, system databases, data and log files, and the services that run it. From there you install and connect, restore a real database and read its internals, and work through the daily craft of the role: logins and least privilege, backup and restore with a proven point-in-time recovery, integrity checks and index maintenance, monitoring with wait statistics and dynamic management views, and calm troubleshooting of blocking, deadlocks, full transaction logs, and failed jobs. You finish by automating routine work with T-SQL and PowerShell and by surveying the high-availability and disaster-recovery options so you can say what to choose when. Every T-SQL statement in the course was executed against SQL Server 2022 and the output you see is real. SSMS and Windows dialog steps are written out precisely with a screenshot placeholder, so the concepts and queries stand on their own even before the hosted lab is available. The course ends with a project: take over a neglected instance, assess it, secure it, back it up, schedule its maintenance, prove a restore, and write the runbook.

The database administrator's job, and the parts of a SQL Server instance you will spend your career caring for.
55 minLesson 2: Installing SQL Server 2022 and SSMS, and connecting
Install the Developer engine and SSMS, choose an authentication mode, connect, and run your first queries.
1 h 10 minLesson 3: Anatomy of a database — restore AdventureWorks and read its internals
Restore the AdventureWorks2022 sample, then inspect its files, filegroups, recovery model, catalog views, and DMVs.
1 h 15 minLesson 4: Security — logins, users, roles, schemas, and least privilege
Create logins and users, grant least-privilege permissions through roles and schemas, fix orphaned users, and turn on auditing.
1 h 20 minLesson 5: Backup and restore — full, differential, log, and point-in-time
Design a backup strategy around RPO and RTO, take full/differential/log backups, verify them, and restore to a moment before a mistake.
1 h 30 minLesson 6: Maintenance — integrity, indexes, statistics, and scheduled jobs
Run DBCC CHECKDB, reorganize and rebuild indexes by fragmentation, update statistics, and schedule it all with SQL Server Agent.
1 h 25 minLesson 7: Monitoring and performance basics
Read wait statistics, running requests, execution plans, missing-index hints, and tempdb; turn on Query Store; survey Resource Governor.
1 h 20 minLesson 8: Troubleshooting — blocking, deadlocks, full logs, failed jobs
Diagnose blocking chains and deadlocks, fix a full transaction log and a full data file, read a failed job and the error log, and restart safely.
1 h 25 minLesson 9: Automation with T-SQL and PowerShell
Build a DBA utility database, scripted backups, and a scheduled health check; drive backups and reports from PowerShell with the SqlServer module.
1 h 20 minLesson 10: High availability and disaster recovery — what to choose when
Compare log shipping, Always On availability groups, failover clustering, and off-site backups, and match each to a business need.
